Affirmed was the last thoroughbred to win racing's prestigious Triple Crown, which consists of the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes, and the Belmont Stakes. The Triple Crown, run for three-year-olds on three different tracks over three different distances, is among the most difficult of all sporting events, and only eleven horses have succeeded in winning this event.
